Jazz, Swing, Guitar Jazz
Two stellar jazz guitarists performing inspired arrangements of classic jazz standards and original compositions in a jazz guitar duo and quartet with bass and drums .
Award winning jazz guitarist Gerry Beaudoin has had a career that has spanned over three decades and over fifty performances on CD and DVD. His music has been placed on the Grammy Awards ballot three times in his career and he has a full length entry in jazz author Scott Yanow’s definitive work on jazz guitar “The Great Guitarists”. His performance on the New Guitar Summit DVD: Live At The Stoneham Theater was lauded as a ” significant on screen performance of jazz guitar on film”. Gerry has performed and recorded with some of the best of jazz and blues musicians the idioms have to offer including mandolinisist extraordinaire David Grisman, jazz legends saxophonist and blues shouter Eddie ” Cleanhead ” Vinson and pianist Jay McShann, vocalist Karrin Allyson, guitarists John and Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden, Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard, saxophonists Harry Allen, Fred Lipsius from Blood, Sweat and Tears and rock star turned jazz guitarist Jay Geils from the J.Geils Band. He has forged rich ongoing musical relationships with each of these musicians. One special musical relationship was forged through friendship and mentoring. As Gerry tells it,” I had just started teaching guitar and one of my students was a thirteen or fourteen year old boy named Teddy Lavash. He was a very apt, talented pupil and studied with me through the end of high school and on and off through college. I really enjoyed his lessons and he took my advice and let me teach him how to read music and he studied rudimentry jazz skills, improvisation and received an advanced course of study in harmony and c hording. After graduation I didn’t see too much of him and he moved to the west coast for business. About six years ago his mother called me and asked me to play at his surprise birthday party she was throwing. I asked Teddy to sit in and ever modest he demurred saying he hadn’t been playing very much. He finally relented and I was blown away. He had matured into a professional jazz guitarist in the time since I had last seen him. He started lessons with me again and I soon realized I had found a duo partner that suited me and could support and inspire me in my performance. Our first gigs together were at a local restaurant in Concord MA called Main Streets Market and Cafe. I was able to secure gigs on a regular basis when I wasn’t on the road with other groups. and we honed our duo style and skills as well as developing that “second sight” so crucial to playing good jazz. The Gerry Beaudoin-Teddy Lavash Jazz Guitar Duo has become one of my regular performing situations and one of my favorites. We even received a mention in Scott Yanows book on jazz guitar, The Great Guitarists. Teddy has a unique style that blends the influences seminal to his playing. Great jazz guitarists like Barney Kessel and Kenny Burrell with a little Tony Mottola thrown in , the great Chet Atkins, bluesman T-Bone Walker , and country swing and rock-a-billy guitarists Eldon Shamblin and Carl Perkins. I also like to think there is a little Gerry Beaudoin in his playing.”
Saturday night at Main Street features a diverse group of tunes done in the great jazz guitar duo traditions. This is not just a blowing session. From Teddy’s beautiful solo arrangement ofStardust and Gerrys duo arrangement of Embracable You, George Barnes and Bucky Pizzarelli come to mind. Blue Moon and Barneys blues have pure Barney flowing through them. The high light of the recording as far as pure beauty is the delightful, Jackie’s Serenade. On five tunes Gerry and Teddy are supported by the buoyant in the pocket bass of Dave Landoni and sure footed swinging time keeper Mark Texeira on drums.
A send Gerry Beaudoin Teddy Lavash recording is due out the end of 2013 so watch for it.
